Penedès
Between the Mediterranean and the inland hills, Penedès connects still wines, local grapes and one of sparkling wine’s great cellar traditions.

The wine-coloured dot marks a general location, not legal vineyard boundaries.

A wider view to put the region in context. Both maps face north.
First, find your bearings
Where are we?
Find Catalonia in northeastern Spain, then the vineyard country between Barcelona and Tarragona. Vilafranca del Penedès and Sant Sadurní d’Anoia are useful inland anchors, with the coast around Sitges nearby. Penedès describes a landscape and a protected wine designation; Cava is a separate designation whose historic heart lies here and whose production area also extends elsewhere.
From the place to the glass
Start with these conversations.
Xarel·lo: a local thread
Xarel·lo is an important Penedès grape, appearing in still whites as well as sparkling blends. Its presence links two cellar routes without making the finished wines interchangeable. Macabeu, known elsewhere as Macabeo or Viura, and Parellada also belong in this conversation.
Still wines deserve the spotlight
The Penedès council’s catalogue includes single-varietal whites, white blends, reds and rosés. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other grapes extend the range. A bottle from this area can therefore take you well beyond sparkling wine.
Several sparkling identities
Cava is central to the area’s history. Clàssic Penedès and Corpinnat are other names a visitor may encounter, with distinct organisations and requirements. Do not identify every bottle of local sparkling wine as Cava: read the designation actually printed on it.
Look a little closer
A region has places within it.
Sant Sadurní d’Anoia
This town and its surroundings form the historical centre of Cava, with a strong identity built around sparkling-wine cellars. Follow the bottle from base-wine blending to its second fermentation, lees ageing, riddling and disgorgement.
Vilafranca del Penedès
The town makes a useful base for understanding the region’s wine culture and the Penedès designation. Compare the council’s wine catalogue with a map: grape, vineyard location and certification are different pieces of information.
Coast, valleys and higher ground
The broader landscape moves between Mediterranean influence and inland hills. Look for a winery’s specific vineyard setting rather than assigning one climate, soil or flavour to the entire region. The maps here are orientation guides, not appellation boundaries.
A name with a story
What the label can tell you.
DO Penedès and DO Cava are different protected designations. Cava’s geographical scheme includes Comtats de Barcelona, Valle del Ebro, Viñedos de Almendralejo and Requena. Its Valls d’Anoia-Foix subzone connects especially closely with the Penedès heartland. A regional address alone does not establish which designation certifies a particular bottle.
A small Cork Dork discovery
Let the map join the tasting.
Compare a still Xarel·lo with a Cava whose producer lists Xarel·lo in the blend. Record the other grapes, fermentation route, lees time and sweetness. Which differences come from making sparkling wine, and which remain questions about grapes, vineyards or maturation?
Small pours, your own words, and no marks for impressive vocabulary.
