Roussanne Wines

A southern Rhône white and a northern Rhône single-grape cuvée give Roussanne a place of its own in the finished-wine collection.

From the grape to the finished wine

Roussanne, the grape introduces the ingredient. This wine guide follows actual composition, growing place and the maker’s choices. A single-varietal wine can combine vineyard parcels, barrels or other lots of the same variety.

This guide follows wines sold or understood through one leading grape. A grape name on the label is not a universal guarantee of 100% composition: rules vary. Where an example is described here as 100%, that statement comes from its appellation or producer source. Check the specific bottle and vintage.

A documented single-grape example

Beaucastel identifies its 2021 Roussanne Vieilles Vignes as 100% Roussanne from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate describes pressing and settling, fermentation split between 30% oak barrels and 70% stainless steel, then eight months of maturation in the same proportions.

Read the cellar account closely

That split describes vessels rather than two different grape varieties. The assembled wine remains single-varietal. It is also a release-specific account: it should not be copied as the method for every Roussanne wine or every Beaucastel white.

Fermentation vessel, maturation vessel, time with lees and bottle rest answer different questions. A flavour description alone does not prove that a wine was oaked, stirred or made with malolactic fermentation.

The nearby blend conversation

Domaine du Tunnel supplies a second documented 100% Roussanne route within Saint-Péray, with eight to ten months of maturation in its short account. This northern Rhône example and Beaucastel’s southern Rhône wine share a grape while retaining different origins and production records. A shared ingredient starts the comparison; it does not settle it.

At the table

Begin with a small pour beside fish, a savoury vegetable tart or roast poultry. Notice freshness, weight, texture and any sweetness before choosing a sauce. The actual wine matters more than one fixed food match attached to its grape.

Use comparable glasses and temperatures when making a side-by-side tasting. The producer’s notes supply a useful starting record, while your observations can remain in your own words.

A small Cork Dork discovery

Give your curiosity a little room.

Compare Beaucastel’s 2021 Roussanne Vieilles Vignes with Domaine du Tunnel’s Roussanne entry. Record origin, composition and disclosed vessels separately. Check the actual vintage before applying either account to a bottle in front of you.

Your observations, your words. Small pours welcome.

A few questions worth uncorking.

Does single-varietal mean one vineyard or vessel?

No. Lots of the same grape can be assembled.

Is the stated maturation a rule for the whole grape?

No. Follow the specific producer, cuvée and release.

Can the grape also belong in a blend?

Yes. A grape’s single-varietal wine and its blended uses belong alongside one another.
