McLaren Vale

South of Adelaide, a coastal landscape gives Shiraz, Grenache and a growing cast of Mediterranean grapes room to speak.

First, find your bearings

Where are we?

McLaren Vale lies on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, between the hills south of Adelaide and Gulf St Vincent. Follow the map from the city toward the coast rather than confusing this region with the Barossa Valley to the northeast. McLaren Vale is also the name of a town within the wider wine region.

From the place to the glass

Start with these conversations.

Shiraz

Australia’s familiar name for Syrah leads naturally into McLaren Vale. Examples range from fresh and fruit-led to concentrated and structured; read the producer’s approach to oak and extraction.

Grenache

A rewarding second stop, with fragrant red-fruit and more substantial expressions to explore. Old vines can be part of a vineyard’s story, but the words alone do not tell you how the wine will taste.

Cabernet & Mediterranean varieties

Cabernet Sauvignon is established here, while grapes such as Fiano, Nero d’Avola and Tempranillo broaden the conversation. Try a familiar variety first, then follow one name that is new to you.

Regional tendencies are starting points. Vineyard, vintage, grower and winemaker all matter; a place name does not promise one flavour.

Look a little closer

A region has places within it.

McLaren Vale town

A practical point of orientation for the surrounding vineyards and cellar doors. The town dot is a gateway, not an appellation boundary.

Blewitt Springs

Northeast of the town, this is a locality you may meet in vineyard descriptions, particularly around Grenache. Look for the specific vineyard and the grower’s account of its soils.

Willunga & the coast

Willunga and nearby coastal places help you picture the region’s southern side. These are orientation points; a locality name on a travel map need not represent a separate legal wine classification.

A name with a story

What the label can tell you.

McLaren Vale identifies an Australian geographical indication. Shiraz and Syrah are names for the same grape, while Grenache is a different variety altogether. A label may emphasise a vineyard, an old-vine story or a blend. Those clues are an invitation to read further. Our broader Australian winery stories provide context, but an Australian producer is not automatically based in this particular region.

A small Cork Dork discovery

Let the map join the tasting.

Compare the descriptions of a McLaren Vale Shiraz and Grenache. Circle words about fruit, structure and oak, then find the vineyard information behind them. If you have both wines, use equal small pours in the same glass shape. Would you describe their differences in the same words as the label?

Small pours, your own words, and no marks for impressive vocabulary.
