Margaret River
Turn toward Australia’s southwest and let the ocean join the wine conversation. Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and white blends offer different routes into Margaret River’s vineyard landscape.

The wine-coloured dot marks a general location, not legal vineyard boundaries.

First, find your bearings
Where are we?
Margaret River is a wine region in the southwest of Western Australia, well south of Perth. Busselton, Margaret River town and Augusta provide orientation around the wider landscape. The wine region and the town sharing its name are different scales of place. A cellar visit may begin in town, but the origin of the grapes deserves its own position on the map.
From the place to the glass
Start with these conversations.
Cabernet Sauvignon: a coastal red route
Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Margaret River’s signature grapes. Some wines put it forward alone; others combine it with Merlot or other varieties. Ask for the release’s actual composition before calling it a Bordeaux-style blend. The comparison introduces a grape family, while the growing origin remains Western Australia.
Chardonnay: follow the cellar choices
Chardonnay gives a white-wine route through the region. Compare accounts of pressing, oak fermentation, malolactic fermentation, lees contact and maturation. Those choices can shape texture and aroma without changing the grape’s identity. A vineyard name helps connect the winemaking account with a particular growing site.
Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon
These two distinct white grapes are important regional names and can work together in blends. Sauvignon Blanc–Sémillon and Sémillon–Sauvignon Blanc wordings invite a composition check rather than an assumed fixed recipe. Look for proportions and vessel choices in the individual wine’s technical notes.
Look a little closer
A region has places within it.
A town and a wider vineyard landscape
Margaret River town is a useful base for orientation, but the registered region extends beyond it. Locate the vineyard named by the maker rather than treating the cellar’s postal address as the source of every bottle. A region can accommodate several distinct site stories.
Wilyabrup and smaller place names
Wilyabrup is a familiar local name in the regional wine conversation. Read smaller location and vineyard names as clues that deserve investigation, rather than assuming each one is a separately registered appellation. The official geographical register supplies the legal hierarchy.
Follow a season, then a site
The association’s vintage reports open a route into changing conditions across years. Put that regional account beside a producer’s own harvest notes. Rain, warmth, timing and vineyard decisions can affect individual varieties differently; a vintage summary is useful context for further questions.
A name with a story
What the label can tell you.
Margaret River is a protected wine geographical indication within Western Australia. A regional designation establishes origin, rather than a compulsory grape recipe or a guarantee of one taste. Single-varietal wines and blends both belong in the discovery. Keep the precise wine name, vineyard when supplied, vintage and cellar information beside the regional name.
A small Cork Dork discovery
Let the map join the tasting.
Start with a Margaret River Cabernet wine and a Chardonnay from the same producer. Record their vineyard origins and cellar choices. Then read a Sauvignon Blanc–Sémillon blend account: what does each grape contribute according to the maker, and what is the role of oak or stainless steel? Let the questions guide the next page you explore.
Small pours, your own words, and no marks for impressive vocabulary.
