An estate story in two languages

The family estate works its own vineyard sites, including Castel Ringberg at Caldaro and Kastelaz at Tramin. Italian and German place names appear side by side in Alto Adige: Caldaro is Kaltern, and Termeno is Tramin. Elena Walch’s work helped shape the estate’s modern identity; her daughters Julia and Karoline now manage the business. This is one estate’s story within a region that also has important cooperative producers.

Kastelaz and Gewürztraminer

Kastelaz is a vineyard name, while Gewürztraminer names the grape. Keeping the two separate helps explain why a single-vineyard wine can carry both. The estate’s own material attributes the nickname “Queen of Gewürztraminer” to wine critics. It offers an affectionate introduction to the reputation she built around this expressive grape.

Beyond the Clouds takes another route

Beyond the Clouds began with the 2000 vintage. The producer describes a white blend predominantly of Chardonnay, with varieties pressed, fermented and matured together in oak. It should therefore not be mistaken for a Gewürztraminer bottling. The wine offers a practical link to blending, oak and lees work. Read the information for the specific vintage before assuming a fixed recipe or the same maturation details every year.

Three things to notice

  • Elena Walch identifies both a person and the estate bearing her name.
  • Kastelaz Gewürztraminer and Beyond the Clouds are different wines.
  • A family estate and a cooperative represent different structures, not automatic rankings of quality.

Try a little discovery

Compare the estate’s Kastelaz Gewürztraminer and Beyond the Clouds descriptions. List vineyard or selection, grape information and cellar choices in separate columns. Which clues predict aromatic character, and which concern texture? If tasting, use the same familiar glass; no specialist set is needed.
