Meet Ferreirinha

Antónia Adelaide Ferreira is remembered in Portugal as Ferreirinha. Sogrape’s historical account places her life between 1811 and 1896 and describes her as a major figure in Douro viticulture and business, also remembered for support of people in need. The Douro Museum’s library lists a substantial biography devoted to her, a useful route beyond a short producer introduction.

A landscape has a working life

Her story offers a way into a wine region through the decisions and labour behind its vineyards. An estate is more than a view: land, planting, seasonal work, cellar capacity and selling the wine must fit together. Rather than treating a famous owner as the whole story, use her name as a starting point for asking who else made the business possible.

Follow the name carefully

Ferreira and Casa Ferreirinha appear in wine stories and on modern labels, but a modern bottling should not be treated as something she personally made. The dates matter. So does the style: a link with the Douro does not by itself tell you whether a bottle is Port or an unfortified wine. Read the label before letting the familiar name supply the answer.

Three things to notice

  • A regional legacy can include commerce, land management and community as well as winemaking.
  • An affectionate nickname can carry local memory, but it is not a substitute for historical sources.
  • A modern brand and a nineteenth-century person occupy different points on the timeline.

A few milestones

  • 1811: Ferreira is born.
  • 19th century: Her working life becomes part of the Douro’s wine history.
  • 1896: She dies, leaving an enduring regional legacy.

Try a little discovery

Find a producer’s account of a Douro estate and note three kinds of information: a date, a place and a named person. Then identify one question it leaves unanswered about vineyard or cellar workers. Follow the Fortified Wine guide to distinguish a wine style from an estate name.

A few questions worth uncorking

Is every Douro wine Port?

No. The Douro also produces unfortified wines. Check the designation and wine style rather than relying on geography alone.

Where can I read more about Ferreira?

The Douro Museum library catalogues Dona Antónia by Gaspar Martins Pereira and Maria Luísa Nicolau de Almeida de Olazabal, coordinated by Fernando de Sousa.
