Cape Winelands
South Africa’s Cape Winelands bring mountain-framed vineyards near Cape Town into view, with Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a wide range of other wines to explore.

The wine-coloured dot marks a general location, not the legal extent of the wine region.

A wider view to put the region in context. Both maps face north.
First, find your bearings
Where are we?
Find the southwestern tip of Africa, then move inland from Cape Town towards Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek. Cape Winelands is our broad travel and discovery heading here. It does not mean one legal wine appellation or every vineyard in the Western Cape.
From the place to the glass
Start with these conversations.
Chenin Blanc / Steen
Traditionally known locally as Steen, Chenin Blanc is the same grape under two names. A versatile introduction to South African whites, from fresh expressions to richer, textured wines.
Cabernet Sauvignon
Stellenbosch is a useful place to follow this grape, alone or in blends.
More Cape conversations
Pinotage, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay broaden the range.
Regional tendencies are starting points. Vineyard, vintage, grower and winemaker all matter; a place name does not promise one flavour.
Look a little closer
A region has places within it.
Stellenbosch
East of Cape Town, with hills and mountain slopes to explore through Cabernet Sauvignon and other grapes.
Paarl
Farther northeast, an established centre of Cape wine country with many varieties.
Franschhoek
A mountain-framed valley east of Stellenbosch and Paarl, with its own wine and cultural identity.
A name with a story
What the label can tell you.
South Africa’s Wine of Origin system uses defined geographic names on labels. Those origins are more precise than our broad Cape Winelands heading. Look for the specific region, district or ward on the bottle as you follow this introduction towards an individual wine.
A small Cork Dork discovery
Let the map join the tasting.
Compare two Cape Chenin Blancs with different named origins or approaches to oak. Follow with a Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon to explore another thread of the region’s personality.
Small pours, your own words, and no marks for impressive vocabulary.
