Rhône Valley

France’s Rhône Valley follows a river south towards the Mediterranean, linking northern Syrah country with the Grenache-led blends of the warmer south.

First, find your bearings

Where are we?

Find southeastern France, then follow the Rhône south from the Lyon area towards Avignon. The wine-growing corridor includes vineyards on both sides of the river. Rhône Valley is an umbrella for a varied family of appellations.

From the place to the glass

Start with these conversations.

Northern reds

Syrah is the key red grape and a direct route into the northern Rhône’s identity.

Southern reds

Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre are important blending partners, alongside other varieties.

White Rhône wines

Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne open the northern conversation. Southern whites draw on a wider range, including Grenache Blanc and Clairette.

Regional tendencies are starting points. Vineyard, vintage, grower and winemaker all matter; a place name does not promise one flavour.

Look a little closer

A region has places within it.

Northern Rhône

Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Hermitage help you explore the northern wine country.

Southern Rhône

Around and beyond Avignon, names such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape introduce a different landscape.

Read the appellation

Côtes du Rhône and a more specific village or cru name offer different levels of the origin story.

A name with a story

What the label can tell you.

A Rhône label often leads with place rather than one grape. The appellation offers clues about origin and permitted varieties; the producer’s notes explain the actual blend and cellar choices. This makes the region a useful next step after learning grape names.

A small Cork Dork discovery

Let the map join the tasting.

Compare a northern Rhône Syrah with a southern Rhône red blend. Check the grapes, then notice aroma, fruit, tannin and texture without assuming every northern or southern wine will behave the same way.

Small pours, your own words, and no marks for impressive vocabulary.
