Niagara Peninsula

Ontario’s Niagara Peninsula lies between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, where lake influence and the Niagara Escarpment help shape fresh whites, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Icewine.

First, find your bearings

Where are we?

Find southern Ontario beside the Great Lakes, near the United States border. Vineyards sit south of Lake Ontario, across the lake from Toronto. The Niagara River forms the eastern edge of the wine-growing area. The wine country extends well beyond the familiar landmark of Niagara Falls.

From the place to the glass

Start with these conversations.

Riesling & Chardonnay

White-wine starting points, with fresh and more textured interpretations to explore.

Cabernet Franc & Pinot Noir

Red wines that invite questions about ripeness, freshness and the conditions of the vintage.

Icewine

Sweet wine from grapes naturally frozen on the vine: one Niagara expression, not a description of all its wines.

Regional tendencies are starting points. Vineyard, vintage, grower and winemaker all matter; a place name does not promise one flavour.

Look a little closer

A region has places within it.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

The eastern part of wine country, between the lake and Niagara River.

The Benchlands

Escarpment-related slopes and benches west of St. Catharines provide another thread.

More precise labels

Subappellation names can narrow the origin within Niagara Peninsula.

A name with a story

What the label can tell you.

We use Niagara Peninsula because it is an established Ontario wine appellation. “Niagara wine country” is a broader conversational description. The formal name helps connect a map, a bottle label and the surrounding landscape.

A small Cork Dork discovery

Let the map join the tasting.

Compare two Niagara Cabernet Francs from the same vintage, or explore a dry Riesling beside an Icewine. Ask whether the contrast comes from grape, origin, harvest conditions or winemaking.

Small pours, your own words, and no marks for impressive vocabulary.
