Okanagan Valley

British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley follows a chain of lakes through Canada’s dry interior, moving from cooler northern sites to warmer southern red-wine country.

First, find your bearings

Where are we?

Find British Columbia on Canada’s Pacific side, then move inland beyond the coastal mountains. The wine region stretches north from the United States border towards Armstrong. Kelowna, Penticton and Osoyoos are useful points along this long valley.

From the place to the glass

Start with these conversations.

Fresh whites

Riesling, Chardonnay and aromatic varieties lead into the cooler side of the valley.

Pinot Noir

A starting point for exploring cooler red-wine sites and the influence of location.

Southern reds

Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah give the warmer south another emphasis.

Regional tendencies are starting points. Vineyard, vintage, grower and winemaker all matter; a place name does not promise one flavour.

Look a little closer

A region has places within it.

Kelowna & the north

A starting point for vineyards around Okanagan Lake and cooler expressions.

Penticton & nearby benches

Lakeside slopes and named bench areas invite a closer look at origin.

Oliver & Osoyoos

The warmer southern valley leads towards the United States border.

A name with a story

What the label can tell you.

Okanagan Valley is a recognised geographic indication for British Columbia wine. Smaller named origins can make a label more precise. BC VQA identifies the province’s wine quality and origin system; that is different from simply finding a Canadian address on a winery label.

A small Cork Dork discovery

Let the map join the tasting.

Choose an Okanagan Pinot Noir and a Cabernet Franc, checking where their grapes grew. Follow the origins from north to south on the map, then compare freshness, fruit and tannin.

Small pours, your own words, and no marks for impressive vocabulary.
