Rogue Valley

Oregon has more than one wine landscape. Head south to the Rogue Valley for varied valleys, grape choices and a different starting point from Willamette Pinot Noir.

First, find your bearings

Where are we?

Rogue Valley is in southern Oregon, within the broader Southern Oregon AVA. Medford, Ashland, Jacksonville and Grants Pass help orient a landscape shaped by the Rogue River and its tributaries. Applegate Valley is a smaller AVA within Rogue Valley.

From the place to the glass

Start with these conversations.

Follow a grape, then its site

Choose a familiar grape and ask which part of the valley supplied it. Compare the vineyard’s setting with a second producer’s account.

Compare with Willamette Valley

Keep the grape constant when possible. What does the producer tell you about ripeness, picking date, fermentation and maturation?

Look beyond one signature wine

The regional board emphasizes the range of grapes grown here. Use that breadth as an invitation to explore rather than assuming a single regional recipe.

Look a little closer

A region has places within it.

Applegate Valley

A nested AVA within Rogue Valley. The smaller origin is a useful next step when a label or vineyard account names it.

Rivers and valleys

The Applegate, Bear Creek and Illinois river systems help explain the wider regional landscape. River, town and appellation names describe different things.

Jacksonville and a historical thread

The Oregon Wine Board connects Peter Britt and his Valley View Winery, established in 1873, with the area’s early wine history.

A name with a story

What the label can tell you.

Rogue Valley is an AVA: a delimited grape-growing origin. Southern Oregon is a broader AVA; Applegate Valley is a smaller one inside Rogue Valley. None of these names alone tells you the blend or the cellar method.

A small Cork Dork discovery

Let the map join the tasting.

Pick a Rogue Valley wine and a Willamette Valley wine. Record the grapes and precise origins before comparing them. Which differences can you trace to documented vineyard or cellar choices, and which remain questions for the maker?

Small pours, your own words, and no marks for impressive vocabulary.
