Meet the grape before the wine

Piquepoul Blanc is the white grape most closely associated with Picpoul de Pinet. Picpoul Blanc is a familiar alternative spelling. The grape and the appellation answer different questions: what grew in the vineyard, and where a protected wine comes from.

The white grape also appears in the southern Rhône conversation, including blends. Its presence outside Pinet does not turn every bottle into Picpoul de Pinet. In California, Tablas Creek documents a single-varietal 2023 Picpoul Blanc, providing a useful example of the grape in another setting.

What might you notice?

Freshness

Acidity is a useful first observation. Notice the mouth-watering impression, then distinguish it from sweetness, alcohol and the temperature of the wine.

Citrus and other associations

Lemon and other citrus, floral notes and sometimes broader fruit can enter the vocabulary. These are possibilities shaped by ripeness, place and winemaking.

Texture deserves attention

A fresh wine can still have weight and length. Lees contact, vessels and maturation affect how a producer presents the grape; acidity does not require a thin wine.

Where should we look?

Start near the Thau lagoon in Languedoc, between the country around Agde, Pézenas and Sète. INAO identifies Picpoul de Pinet as a still-white appellation using Piquepoul Blanc. Then follow the grape toward the Rhône Valley and producer-documented examples abroad.

This profile concentrates on the white variety. Names involving Piquepoul Noir or Gris need their own identification; a shared name does not make every colour the same grape profile.

From vineyard to cellar

For the finished wine, follow our Picpoul de Pinet guide. Its producer example explains pressing, settling and controlled fermentation. Compare those choices with the maker’s account for a wine from elsewhere, keeping the grape constant while place and cellar decisions change.

At the table

Seafood is a familiar invitation, with the nearby lagoon helping explain the association. Also try a vegetable tart, a lemon-dressed salad or simply cooked fish. Notice the preparation, salt and sauce rather than assuming every bottle needs oysters.

A small Cork Dork discovery

Give your curiosity a little room.

Put a Picpoul de Pinet label beside a producer-confirmed Picpoul Blanc from another region. Identify grape, origin and cellar details. If tasting, compare small pours at similar temperatures and describe freshness, fruit and texture in your own words.

Your observations, your words. Small pours welcome.

A few questions worth uncorking.

Are Picpoul and Piquepoul different grapes?

Picpoul Blanc and Piquepoul Blanc are names used for the white variety discussed here.
